Lyon proves they belong in Champions League

It looks likely that Olympique Lyonnais head heading to their 10th straight UEFA Champions League with a lopsided 5-1 victory over Belgian side RSC Anderlecth.

Lyon domonated the game from the beginning with a goal in the 10th minute by 19-year old Bosnian international Miralem Pjanić. With monenteum on their side, new signing Lisandro Lopez drew a penality and socred Lyon’s second goal in the 15th minute.

Also, Lyon’s other new signing, Bafétimbi Gomis, who scored 36 goals in the last three years with AS St. Etienne, netted two goals for Lyon. Gomis benefitted from finding holes in the Anderlecth defense which lead the Lyon striker virtually wide open.

The most impressive goal of the night, though, came from Michel Bastos, another off-season signing from Lille, with a left footed shot that hit the left post and into the goal.

Toward the end of the match, Lyon mostly toyed with Anderlecth, messing up on 3-1 chances toward the end. Also, Lyon midfielder Cesar Delgado nearly netted a few goals himself, but could never finish off his chances.

Overall, Lyon was extremely dominate in this match.  Some players didn’t play up to snuff, like Brazilian Cris, who nearly gave up the ball a number of times. Still, to pick out one player that was the “Player of the Match” would be very hard to do.
