Montpellier HSC: Hold your heads high!

Despite Jussie's goal, Montpellier were the dominate side.

“Montpellier were better than us. Winning 1-0 away is a good result but we didn’t deserve it. We won despite playing mediocre football. Sometimes there are evenings like that and some of the individual performances of my players were well below their real level. A draw would have been a fair result,” said Bordeaux manager Laurent Blanc after the Montpellier vs. Bordeaux match.

And he is right! Montpellier deserved the win.

Going into this game, many wondered if Montpellier would be able to keep up with the champions. Bordeaux won their last three games allowing no goals in those games. On top of that, Marouane Chamakh continued with his stellar play. And in addition to that, Yoann Gourcuff was named French Football Player of the Year and Blanc was named Manager of the Year.

But Montpellier was having none of that. The first minute out of the gate, MHSC piled on the pressure. Striker Victor Montano looked to have scored a goal, but offsides was called. Still, Montpellier continued with the pressure, with amazing play from both their striking force and their defensive line. From the first minute to the last, Montpellier were the better side.

Up front, Montano continued to impress with lightning speed up front which the Bordeaux’s top-notch defenders couldn’t find an answer for. In addition, Argentine Alberto Costa showed amazing free kick skills. Most of his kicks hit their intended player target, or gave Bordeaux goaltender Cedric Carrasso a scare. Even after the game, Costa admitted that Montpellier should have won. “We had more chances than them and they didn’t deserve to win. We’re not playing for the same objectives as them. They are playing for the title and we are not,” said Alberto.

Still, after this performance, it is easy to say that Alberto Costa has not only become a player to watch in Ligue 1, but also one of the best set piece players in the entire league. If he continues to play like that, then he will most certainly be looked at by other clubs.

While the offense played well, the same can be said for the defense as well. With the exception of one single breakdown in the defense, which unfortunately lead to the Bordeaux goal scored by Jussie, the Montpellier defense was exceptional.

Emir Spahic and Nenad Dzodic where able to shut down Marouane Chamakh and Yoann Gourcuff. Both Bordeaux superstars were kept quiet throughout the match and made very little, if any, impact. And with the exception of a miscalculated and questionable tackle on Benoit Tremoulinas, Mapou Yangambiwa played exceptional for Montpellier as well.

Basically, even if the result was 1-0, Montpellier can look at this game, hold their heads high, and know that they had the best of the champions on Wednesday. So hats off to Montpellier. In this match you proved that you are the ‘real deal’ and that you need to be taken seriously in Ligue 1.

Congrats!
