AS Cannes moving back up?

AS Cannes was the launching pad for many high-profile footballers. Zinedine Zidane, Patrick Vieira, Sebastian Frey and Julien Escude all started their professional careers with the southern French side. And with the departure of these players in the late 1990s, AS Cannes started to fall from the top flight. Now they find themselves in the Championnat National for the last nine years.

But the club is looking to change that trend.

Last month, Cannes acquired former Monaco and Czech international striker Jan Koller from Russian side FC Krylia Sovetov Samara. Koller scored 12 goals in 51 matches for Monaco. More impressive, he has scored 55 goals in 91 games for the Czech National Team.

Even with the acqusition of Koller, this might not be enough for Cannes. Now the club is looking to sign former French National Team star Sylvain Wiltord, who has been out of contract since he was released by Marseille at the end of last season. Wiltord has been linked to a move to both PSG and Boulogne after his departure from Marseille, but the striker has yet to land a contract with any team.

If Wiltord were to join Cannes, the club would have to be considered the odds-on favorite for the championship, and gain promotion to Ligue 2. Cannes now sits in 13th place, 16 points out of first place, which is currently held by Evian Thonon-Gaillard.
