May 28th News: France gets Euro 2016

Going into yesterday’s bid announcement for the Euro 2016 competition, France seemed to be the favorites over Italy and Turkey. And, as it turned out, France where the favorites, and the winner, of their fifth major football tournement. While the vote was tight, France was able to squeak past Turkey in the second round of voting by one vote to be the host of the European competition.

“I’m not a man of big speeches,” said former French captain Zinedine Zidane, “but for  the French it is great because it brings back 1998, and many other things.” While Zidane brings up 1998, he was talking more about butts in seats at the venues instead of the performance of play (which we all know, it might be impossible to beat the 1998 team).

French President Nicolas Sarkozy also stated that he was “very, very honored” to be holding the Euros.”I just want to say how pleased we are to be the hosts of the Euros. I congratulate all the teams of the Federation, the League, and I would like to thank all the football players, Willy Sagnol, Zinedine Zidane, Youri Djorkaeff, Karembeu, I would like to thank Roselyne Bachelot, Rama Yade and tell you how happy we are at this choice, for all the French fans for all football fans. ”

UEFA boss and former French great Michel Platini said that this tournement was much needed for France, who is in need of updating and fixing up some of their venues. In addition, Platini said that the arrival of Nicolas Sarkozy was very important and is what might have tipped the scales in France’s direction.

In other Ligue 1 news, Nancy winger Issiar Dia stated that he is interested in making a move to Bordeaux. While on holiday in Malaysia, Dia said that “there is no problem with a transfer” out of his current club. Many teams, including Toulouse and Rennes, but Bordeaux seems to be the ideal choice for the winger right now. In addition, he said that he has mixed views on Bordeaux not playing in any European competition. He has admitted that other teams that that are in European competition, and he still doesn’t know where he would go.

Rumors are that the player would be transferred out of Nancy Lorraine at a price of 10 million Euros.

In other transfer news (which always seems to be about 20% correct when it comes to speculation) there is talk the AC Milan has thrown their hat into the ring in acquiring the services of Marseille defender Stephane Mbia. Bayern Munich and Arsenal have also shown interest in Mbia. In addition to Mbia, Arsenal has also shown interest in Lorient’s Laurent Koscielny, which has been picked up by a number of French media sources.

Tottenham Hotspur’s French defender Dorian Dervite is also looking at possibly making a move to St. Etienne. Dervite is currently out of contract with Tottenham, and it is strongly felt that he would be making a move to Les Verts.

Finally, after the friendly with Costa Rica, Rennes look to acquire the services of that country’s national team captain, Bryan Ruiz. who scored 24 goals last year with Dutch side FC Twente. The services of Ruiz would be greatly needed, especially with French international striker Jimmy Briand leaving the team.

Today is a quite day as far as National Team news. As we know, they are in preparation for their friendly with Tunisia on Sunday.
