French Cup Preview – Round of 32.

A few weeks ago, a number of well-known Ligue 1 teams fell to lesser opponents. And while this weekend’s matchups will separate the men from the boys, another upset could always be in the making.

The French Cup “Round of 32” competition will start off with Paris FC taking on Sochaux. Paris FC repeated their 2008 upset of Toulouse, while Sochaux struggled against CFA side Jarville. Paris could possibly pull off another upset on the road, giving them a big boost in a competition that they were knocked out of early last year.

Another match that might be interesting to watch is ES Wasquehal taking on Lille. There are two reasons why this match up should be one of the more exciting ones to watch. First, Wasquehal defeated Auxerre in one of the big shocks of the last round. Secondly, and many don’t know this, but ES Wasquehal and Lille are rivals. These two teams used to play their matches in the same stadium until Wasquehal was relegated to amateur status. Therefore, while these two team might be on total opposite sides as far as talent, their rivalry will show in this match. And, like any rivalry, you can throw any traditional reasoning out the window.

Ligue 2 side Nîmes Olympique are also looking to score an upset in the French cup as they are hosting Nancy. Nimes is currently in 9th place in Ligue 2 while Nancy has been struggling in Ligue 1. Nimes has been impressive at home with 10 wins already. Though when they do lose, they lose to stronger competition, like Evian and Le Mans. Therefore, with Nancy being a Ligue 1 team, Nimes might have a little trouble. Even if this is the case, their decent Ligue 2 form lately should make them an underdog favorite.

There are three other matches that should showcase close matches as well. Sedan and Metz, two Ligue 2 teams, will square off in Sedan. Sedan has recently taken the lead in the Ligue 2 table, and was one of the favorites going into the year for promotion. As far as Metz, they had a good year last year, but this year has been a different story. Currently lingering in 19th place, Metz are finding themselves in a place they didn’t expect. Still, their recent form is decent and should help make this match close against the favorites Sedan.

Stade de Reims and Clermont Foot are also two Ligue 2 teams that will face each other in the next round of the French Cup. Both have had a less than impressive season. Reims was just promoted to Ligue 2 and might find themselves back in the Championnat National at the end of the season. Clermont Foot remain at mid-table, where it seems they have purchased long-term rent. Still, both teams knocked off impressive opponents in the last round (Clermont defeated ASSE while Reims defeated Montpellier) to make their statements for this round.

Finally, in the only Ligue 1 meeting in this round, Nice will be hosting Lyon. The only reason someone might watch this match up is because it is two Ligue 1 teams. Even with that being said, Lyon should easily cruise through this one. Lyon and Lille are easily the best teams in Ligue 1 right now, and with Bafetimbi Gomis and Jeremy Toulalan playing well, Lyon should just crush the weaker Nice side.

  1. Sochaux can score. The problem is they give us so many cheap goals. I hope they send Paris FC out 🙂

    Also…. Allez Les Sangliers !!! 🙂
